Because their products often require end user assembly and configuration, a focus on quality components is required. Because of this need, and because many OH companies are small businesses, components are often manufactured in small batches. Finding manufacturers and fabricators that will work in such small amounts can be extremely difficult.

Perhaps because this hurdle is so immediate, a sizable number of OSH projects have focused on technologies that facilitate small-scale manufacturing.
